Not up to par for modern day quality of sound.

I have just returned one of these new Onkyo RZ50 to the seller. Thank you so much Crystal and Crutchfield for the unbeatable customer service. The receiver is well equipped and updated BUT, digital and analog amplification is NOISY, full of hiss and hum, especially notable when you reach 65dB. This is a HUGE step backwards for Onkyo, as quiet amplification and low noise is the minimal backbone of any respectable Ampli/receiver. I got an old Denon x3300W and it's leaps and bounds above in quality of sound. The Onkyo rZ50 receiver clips, distorts, hisses, hums, and makes noise in any listening Mode. Not even Pure Audio or Direct is able to clean the signal. So it's not noise interference from any other component or circuit. It's inherent to the basic unit of amplification on this model. I was a victim of the Onkyo HDMI board debacle some years ago, and that made me go toward Denon after that. Because I have historically liked Onkyo signature sound, and based on Andrew Robinson's review, I took a leap of faith and purchase a new RZ50. Yes, it's got Dirac Live and that is probably the main selling point. But what's the point of EQing a dirty signal? Sadly, nowadays, Onkyo is not on par with its competitors. This model is faulty, (browse the net and you will find appalling reviews and customer experiences) but what's unforgivable is the very low quality of sound. I hope to help some readers with this. Now I will keep shopping at Crutchfield to find an affordable way to get DIRAC.
[Rewarded Review] Doesn't work as advertised

2 extra stars given for potential. The Onkyo TX-RZ50 is incredibly feature rich and a screaming value......if you're lucky enough to have a functioning unit.

I finally built my 5.1.4 home theater system and my installer set everything up properly. I immediately noticed the GUI for the receiver flickers on my screen and experienced HDMI dropouts (LG G2 tv) but those seemed to settle once I launched a movie or show. Worse yet, while the test tones play from all 9 speakers and sub, the RZ50 simply will not output Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. I cannot get Atmos tracks to play with my Apple TV 4K or my Panasonic 820K (which is properly set to output Bitstream audio) and have to use the Dolby Digital tracks to get any audio. My installer couldn't figure it out, nor could anyone else I know with home theater experience. Thankfully (or so I thought), I had purchased Geek Squad protection for the Onkyo so I dropped it off at my local Best Buy for repair and was told it had to be shipped to a service center. I immediately got a notification that the device had been shipped to the local service center (which is less than 60 miles from where I live). It has now been 10 days that I am without my receiver and have received exactly zero updates on the status of my repair. I understand receivers are complex and the repair may take some time but having to send away your expensive item without any updates or estimated timeline is frustrating and not very confidence inspiring.

Needless to say, I am very disappointed in my experience with the Onkyo RZ50 and so far less than satisfied with the service I paid for.

I will update my review if I get it back in full working condition, as well as update my experience with Geek Squad.
Fantastic receiver with Onkyo's July discount

A longtime Marantz user needing to replace an old unit. I saw so many good reviews on this Onkyo on YouTube for best receiver under $2000.

When Onkyo offered a $600 discount in July this was an easy decision. Plus, Crutchfield offers free delivery and has a great return policy if the equipment is not right for you.

This receiver is a big step up in advancement from the 10 plus year-old it replaced plus it sounds really good for music and cinema after a short burn in and enhancing it with Dirac Live room correction (included).

Setup was easy and straightforward. One of the convenient options in speaker setup is if you have Klipsch speakers, which I do, you select which Klipsch speaker model you own, and the receiver automatically adjusts for the appropriate crossover setting. That feature does not apply to other speaker brands.

I tried both Onkyo's AccuEQ and Dirac Live room correction. Both are really good but in my opinion Dirac Live is a noticeable step-up in performance in my room.

I really like the FM tuner!

I did not use or setup Google/Alexa, Sonos or Bluetooth, so I can't comment on those, but those options are available. I only used TuneIn for streaming and that worked fine.

I do not regret buying it because easy setup, it sounds great for music/cinema, has Dirac Live, plenty of clean power, pre-outs available for external amp, old school FM tuner, 8K/4K HDMI, browser-based access available, and plenty of other setu
Lives up to the hype.

This unit for me has lived up to all the hype I have come across on the internet. The sound is fantastic, matching and in some respects beating the 9.1.4 Emotiva MC1/BasX setup it is replacing. I have this set up as a 7.1.2 system being powered only from the Onkyo and it sounds as good as the Emotiva for music and just wipes the floor with the Emotiva watching movies. This units ability to place objects, highlight details I never have noticed before and give fantastic dialogue is so refreshing. I was pulling my hair out with the MC1 and its constant glitching that required power cycles and even unplugging the unit. The Onkyo hasn't had a single hiccup in my short experience. It has an app, fantastic amplifier section, video processing makes my TV shine, more than enough channels and the ability to expand with an external amp. When I saw the sale price I couldn't let it go, I considered the RZ70 but for my needs and speakers (Klipsch RP line) this was more than adequate and so glad I saved the 1000 dollars over the RZ70. I'm not an audiophile, I listen to music and get lost in movies but don't get critical over every detail. If you want a do it all receiver then absolutely consider this and don't overlook it because of its age. It's very relevant in 2024/25 and Im blown away by how well the RZ50 sounds with just some low level late night 2 channel music sessions. Selling off the old setup and not even looking back. Onkyo has a new fan here.
